Frequently Asked Questions

Toronto Vision Therapy and Optometry

General & Booking

Do I need a referral to book an appointment?
No referral is needed. You can book directly online or call us at (416) 498-3438.
What ages do you see?
We see patients of all ages — from young children (ages 3 and up) to seniors. Many of our specialty programs, including vision therapy and myopia control, are most effective when started early in childhood.
How long does a first appointment take?
A comprehensive eye exam typically takes 45–60 minutes. Initial vision therapy assessments run 60–90 minutes and include a detailed evaluation of how your eyes work together.
What languages do you offer services in?
We serve patients in English, Mandarin, and Cantonese.
Where are you located?
We are at 5 Fairview Mall Dr, Suite 410, North York, ON M2J 2Z1 — on the 4th floor at the corner of Fairview Mall Drive and Don Mills Road, beside Fairview Mall. Ample parking is nearby and we are accessible by TTC (Don Mills station on Line 5 Eglinton).

Insurance & Coverage

Is a routine eye exam covered by OHIP?
OHIP covers one comprehensive eye exam per year for children under 20 and adults 65 and older. Adults between 20 and 64 are not covered for routine exams under OHIP, though many extended health plans include eye exam benefits.
Is vision therapy covered by insurance?
OHIP does not cover vision therapy. However, many extended health benefit plans — including those from Sun Life, Manulife, Great-West Life, and Green Shield — provide partial coverage under vision care or paramedical services. You pay at the time of your visit and we file your insurance claim on your behalf so you receive reimbursement directly from your insurer. We recommend confirming your coverage with your insurer before starting a program.
Is myopia control covered by insurance?
Coverage varies by plan. MiSight contact lenses are sometimes covered under contact lens benefits. Ortho-K lenses are less commonly covered. Stellest and MiyoSmart glasses may be covered under eyeglass benefits. We file insurance on your behalf and provide itemized receipts for all treatments.

Vision Therapy

What is vision therapy?
Vision therapy is a personalized, doctor-supervised program of visual exercises that retrains how the eyes and brain work together. It addresses conditions that glasses and contact lenses cannot fix — including lazy eye, crossed eyes, convergence insufficiency, and reading-related vision problems.
Who is vision therapy for?
Vision therapy helps children struggling with reading, concentration, or learning; adults recovering from concussion or brain injury; and patients with lazy eye, eye turns, or double vision. It is effective across all ages.
How long does a vision therapy program take?
Program length depends on the condition and the patient's progress. Most programs run between 3 and 12 months. Sessions are one hour long, typically scheduled once a week, with exercises to complete at home between visits.
Is vision therapy effective?
Yes. Vision therapy has strong clinical evidence, particularly for convergence insufficiency. The CITT study found that 73% of patients who completed office-based therapy achieved full or improved outcomes, compared to 43% with home exercises alone. Results depend on diagnosis, age, and how consistently the program is followed.
What conditions does vision therapy treat?
Amblyopia (lazy eye), strabismus (crossed or wandering eyes), convergence insufficiency, eye tracking and focusing difficulties, visual processing problems, post-concussion vision symptoms, and reading-related vision disorders.

Myopia Control

What is myopia control?
Myopia control refers to treatments that slow the progression of nearsightedness (myopia) in children. Without intervention, myopia tends to worsen year over year through childhood. High myopia significantly increases lifetime risk of retinal detachment, glaucoma, and macular degeneration.
What myopia control treatments do you offer?
We offer three clinically proven options: MiSight 1-day contact lenses (soft daily lenses worn during the day), Ortho-K overnight lenses (worn while sleeping; no lenses needed during the day), and Stellest or MiyoSmart spectacle lenses (specially designed glasses for full-time daytime wear).
How effective is myopia control?
Clinical studies show 50–60% reduction in myopia progression with consistent treatment. CooperVision's MiSight clinical study found up to 59% reduction in myopia progression compared to standard contact lenses.
What age should myopia control start?
The earlier the better — ideally between ages 6 and 12, when myopia tends to progress most rapidly. Treatment is beneficial for any child whose prescription is worsening year over year, regardless of age.
Does my child need to wear contact lenses?
Not necessarily. Stellest and MiyoSmart glasses are effective alternatives for children who are not ready or suited for contact lenses.

Neuro-Optometric Rehabilitation

What is neuro-optometric rehabilitation?
Neuro-optometric rehabilitation is a specialized program for patients whose vision has been affected by a neurological event — including concussion, stroke, traumatic brain injury, or multiple sclerosis. It addresses double vision, light sensitivity, reading difficulties, balance problems, and visual field loss.
Do I need a referral?
No referral is required. We welcome self-referrals and also work closely with neurologists, physiatrists, and other members of your care team when appropriate.
What symptoms does it treat?
Common symptoms we treat include headaches when reading, double or blurred vision, difficulty concentrating, sensitivity to light or movement, dizziness, balance problems, and trouble with visual tracking after a head injury.

Eye Exams

What does a comprehensive eye exam include?
Our comprehensive exams cover visual acuity (sharpness), refractive error (your prescription), binocular vision (how the eyes work together), eye health screening (glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetic eye disease, cataracts), and intraocular pressure measurement. Children's exams also include a developmental vision assessment.
How often should I have an eye exam?
Children: annually, or as recommended. Adults 20–64 with no risk factors: every 1–2 years. Adults 65 and older: annually. More frequent exams are recommended for patients with diabetes, high blood pressure, or a family history of glaucoma.
Do you prescribe glasses and contacts?
Yes. We prescribe glasses and contact lenses as part of a comprehensive eye exam and can fit specialty lenses including scleral lenses for patients with keratoconus, severe dry eye, or hard-to-correct prescriptions.
